Jan. 3rd, 2004 04:25 pmSo, lately I've been insane enough to actually wallow into the depths of The Pit of Voles, proving that I am, indeed, a masochist. (Though I'm holding off on the Grey Archive, which I don't particularly care if I'm spelling correctly, so nyah to them.)
I actually haven't read a heck of a lot of fanfiction. I enjoy folks like the
ficbitches so very much, but have felt like I was somehow missing out on the true insanity of it all. I also have felt (marginally) guilty over reading it all, chortling amusedly to myself, and never having really delved into it much first hand.
I think I also questioned, somewhere, in the back of my mind, whether it could all actually really honestly be all THAT bad.
Sadly, it is. It's as bad as everything I've seen reviewed, and worse.
And worse than that, there are pages upon pages of gushing reviews. None more than a line or two long, none without a wince-inducing spelling 'mistake' or three, none without a good smattering of netspeak. This is, truly, the most frightening part of it all. That people write this schlock, and that people think it's good.
And I have a really, really hard time wrapping my brain around the concept that these people are, entirely too often, WAY over 10 years old, which would be my automatic first estimate.
Ouch.
Just *ouch*.
Am I insane for wanting to take the bare bones of one of these "plots" and trying to re-write it, keeping as much of the author's original story intact as possible while actually making it, on some level, a fairly decent story?
I'm *really* tempted, I must say. I think it'd be a fun exercise.
And I get the feeling I'm going to inadvertantly start having to write parodies, just in the process of salvation.
