For those just tuning in...
Aug. 19th, 2004 02:54 amAnd, I suppose, for the general info of folks who have been following along at home...
The first thing I should mention is that, while I "write", I generally hesitate to call myself a "writer". My dabbles into fiction and essays are sporadic at best, and I don't really work at writing consistently enough. I'm trying to change that, which is part of the reason I started up this journal.
I really, really like constructive criticism. Anything I post on this journal is completely fair game. If C&C intimidates you, don't worry about it - I'm honoured that you'd even take the time to read my little bouts of fiction. I'd be even more honoured if you wanted to take the time to give me some honest feedback, though. Particularly of the "this doesn't seem to work - this is why/this is how you might fix it" variety. I have a really hard time seeing my writing 'from the outside', so C&C is a valuable tool for me.
A few projects I'm working on (read: actively neglecting):
Just What You Weren't Looking For
This one came into being for a few reasons, the main one being that I wanted to see a story in which a butch gal was allowed to A) develop a relationship (since, in movies, the butch gal is always single and usually, y'know, gets killed off and stuff) and B) have that relationship be with a straight-IDing guy (and generally see what kind of trouble I can get myself into in the process, har har.) This wound up inadvertantly developing to involve C) a butch-ID'ing gal who occasionally goes out in drag (read: dressed up en femme). This makes me mad, to some degree, because she makes her first appearance "in drag" and makes her initial impression on Yon Future Love Interest as such, and I don't want it to seem like I'm saying "a butch gal could only appeal to a guy if she dressed up all pretty to lure him in!"
Anyway, only three chapters exist at the moment. They were written about half a year ago now, and they're very much "first draft", so C&C would be great before I hack them up for a re-write. The first two chapters especially feel very thin to me, and will probably get a major overhaul. Chapter 3 seems to have a bit more of the essence of what I'm going for.
"Splintered Soul"
I bitch about this one regularly. This story title was a challenge given to me by
demonblade, as found on a "Fantasy Story Name Generator". I've decided to take a contemporary spin on it, though - I think it's going to wind up looking at ideas of social and personal obligation through a vehicle of "members of a band have to deal with X event". I've been grappling with this one for about two months now, on and off; it's decided that it wants to be dialogue heavy, which I find intimidating, and is probably why I'm having a hard time writing it. I'm going to make myself sit down and hack it out, though, so that I'll at least have something to work from, and maybe get some further (read: better) drafts of.
"Finished" Stuff
There is a sad, small, pathetic amount of this, I'm afraid. I say "Finsihed" because these are basically heavily edited first drafts that I finally ran out of things to tweak with at the time. Please C&C these to death, if you're so inclined. It would be nice to turn out some future drafts of some of these.
The Tree's Legacy
Another contemporary drabble. Randomly generated title chosen by
chibiakki.
Wet Sand
A short contemporary drabble, written as a challenge from
dvandva.
The Wedding Bed
This is a fable that I wrote about a year and a half ago. I was having fun experimenting with such a vague, broad narrative (I usually over-describe.) I want to get a firmer grip on the themes and the general writing style and re-write this one, so C&C would be really appreciated.
Wow. It saddens me that I really have hardly any other finished work. Two drabbles, and a short story / fable. All of which are first drafts. Bad ones. Man, I suck.
I was going to mention some stuff on permanent hiatus, but I don't think I'll bother. If any of it ever becomes relevant again (not bloody likely) I'll, like, post about it. Obviously.
