Oh No You Don't
Mar. 16th, 2006 12:16 amI went to a writing workshop tonight. Extremely interesting, extremely fun - we did a 10 minute writing activity, and I got lots of great comments (and laughs) about the story snippit I wrote. As a result I've talked myself into sending one of my stories to the writer in residence at the University, which she will give me feedback about on Friday. Eek! So, uh, for any of you who have read my writing, is there any particular story (or part thereof) that you'd suggest I send her? It shouldn't be too long, around 2,000 words max.
This is the story snippit I wrote, which I have dictated in Mp3 format here. The prompt: a story about a man and a woman fighting over a piece of jewellery.
Oh No You Don’t (vignette, 200 words)
“No.”
“But sweetie - “
“I said no!” The words followed her down the hall, leaving Jim alone with the echo. He let out a curt breath and went after her, trailing her into the living room.
“Look, I can take out a loan, it’s no sweat.”
Julie stopped and turned, her braid of auburn hair whipping around. She stuck a finger in the air, the index, halting Jim in his tracks - though if the finger hadn’t done it the look in her eyes would have. “Jim,” she said, her voice the kind of restrained calm that suited a bull about to take a cowboy for a ride. “I am going to tell you one more time. Once. And once the words have left my lips I will hear nothing more of it. You will not buy me a ring. You will not spend one cent of your hard earned money on a ring. You will not STEAL a ring FOR me. Do you understand?”
Jim nodded.
Julie let out a breath and dropped her hand, a tight smile coming to her lips. “Good. Then we’re settled.”
It was half a minute before Jim said, “How about a necklace?”
