Media Living: Now on Wordwhacker!
Sep. 12th, 2008 01:04 amSchool's in, and I'm cracking open the ol' writing blog again for use in my "Media Living" class. We have to keep a journal throughout the semester wherein we talk about our media use, in conjunction with the course readings. Because I'm nice, I'll keep most of these under a cut so you can skip 'em if you want.
I'm going to kick things off with a "day in the life" view of my media usage. This should be great fodder for the start of a discussion about media addiction, maybe in a day or two. How convenient!
So you're asking yourself. "Cass - how DO you use media in your daily life?" Right? Of course you are.
Well, it goes a little something like this:
I wake up, usually later than I'd intended. I have my alarm set to "radio" but it's a bit off the station so it sounds buzzy - I just use it as an alternative to the mind-wrenching "beep" option. I'll usually hop onto some kind of computer to check my email(s - both school and personal) before too long, followed by livejournal and facebook (as long as I have enough time.) I may do a bit of DDR as a morning workout, and follow up with a few tracks on a CD while I do freestyle exercises.
There is a TV in the kitchen, and it's on just about whenever I'm in there, whether I'm cooking, eating, doing dishes, etc. (Right now I have my laptop in there and am watching "Rich Bride, Poor Bride" on Slice in the background.) If I'm around during the lunch hour I'll catch "The Price is Right" for a bit.
My entertainment medium changes depending on how I'm getting to school. If I'm on the bus, I'll have my mp3 player with me (which, amazingly, is full of REAL ALBUMS that I have purchased. SHOCKING.) I'll listen to my mp3 player when I'm out walking, too. If mum gives me a lift to school, we'll listen to the radio a bit, or maybe a CD if she has one in the car.
School is a cornucopia of media! Yay! I get everything from chalk-on-blackboard right up to power point slides on a projector showing me internet sites. I take real pen-on-paper notes. I occasionally slip onto a PC somewhere and check my emails/livejournal/etc. (Feeding the addiction...)
My afternoons and evenings tend to be TV-focused affairs, particularly honing in on reruns of The Simpsons (and, obviously, ridiculous wedding shows, as mentioned above.) I even time my snacks and meals to when the next episode is available, it's THAT bad. If my dad is watching a baseball game, I'll tend to be drawn to that. Mum has a laptop that lives in the livingroom, and I check General Internet Stuff (email, LJ, facebook, webcomics) on that thing, oh, a hundred and fifty THOUSAND TIMES every day. This is what takes up pretty much the whole evening until I drag myself away and go to bed. (Though I usually tear myself away and go play Rock Band for a while - maybe half an hour to an hour.) And I guess I'm going to start doing some, like, reading and writing for school in there somewhere, which is why I need to break my addiction to checking internet stuff unnecessarily. I also will generally read a bit (of a physical, paper book! OMG!) right before bed.
That's pretty much a day in my media life - some reflection on this in the next couple of days.
