January Writing Prompt Challenge: Day 17

Bit of an odd day today - slow start, some emotions happening without obvious cause, a bit of struggle. But I was patient with myself and in the end I was able to get a lot done and still feel like I got some R&R in over the weekend. I'll call that a win.
Prompt time!
DAY SEVENTEEN PROMPT:
A leader wants to end an obligation to a secret artifact, but they will have to keep a terrible secret.
The "secret" aspect card here is pretty funny. I pulled this prompt by just taking each card at its original orientation. Overall I'm thinking of a military leader that is starting to have a change of heart about his country's use of an artifact of power. Maybe a ring of power. Oh jeeze, could this be LotR AU in which Boromir gets the ring from Frodo and brings it back to Gondor - and Faramir, realizing that his brother has fallen under the sway of the ring, decides that he needs to stop him. But can he kill his brother? Not directly; but he could find the people he travelled with, and help them to infiltrate and stop him. He would likely go down in history as being a traitor to his people; but better that than have them realize how close they had come to turning into a second Mordor.
Funny that a fanfic would come to me given the current Twitter Discourse (trademark, patent pending.) Anyway, it's close to bed time, so that'll do for tonight.
