What am I doing?

Actually, seriously, re-writing "Splintered Soul", that's what.

I know, I know. I haven't posted the original yet. There's a reason for that. In a nutshell, I hate it. But the re-write is coming along nicely, and I hope I won't be afraid to post it when I'm finished with it.

I am also setting myself a deadline: Friday, at 9AM. Mark it on your calendars, people. (Not that I'm expecting it to be a masterpiece... but hell, at least it'll be a finished piece, of a kind.)

Hoooo-kay.

Updated my user info with a selection of links to stories I've posted in the past. I'm going to keep it up-to-date. Also updated my damn memories, to make it easier for both you and me to find the freakin' things.

I should probably do some actual writing sometime, eh?

So, how are y'all? Still with me? Anybody else have any interesting writing projects going on?
wordwhacker: (Default)
Right. I've been pretty productive with "Real Life" things for the past while, but I still feel like I'm neglecting my creative/brainy side. I've forgotten how to make time in my life for reading and writing. So now that the ball is rolling on the more practical side of things, let's see if I can't jump-start the other brain hemisphere, hmm?

That said:

If any writers on my friends list would like to participate in friendly-but-thorough constructive criticism on their (and especially my) writing, please join my community, [livejournal.com profile] red_n_ruthless. Check out the user info, at least. It'll be fun. C'mon. Do it for my sake. Join and rip my stories to shreds. I really want to start writing second drafts of some stories that I've had in the works for a while, and I'd really appreciate the help.

And if any of y'all know anyone else on LJ who would be interested, I would love you forever if you would send them my way.

Now I'm off to crack open an old story and see if I can't turn it into a film script.

Phew

It's been a long time.

So, as soon as NaNoWriMo finished up, I was whisked back to the CBC for another interview, during which I read the first page of my novel. This aired the next day, during which time I was in flight to Montreal, bound (eventually) for NYC. After my Broadway-ridden vacation wrapped up, the Holiday season happened. And then I started to get, well, productive. This is a good thing concerning that strange place we like to call "The Real World", but doesn't do much for my writing, now, does it?

Anyway.

I'm back, and I'm bitchy.

Namely, I've finally made a post to a community that myself and [livejournal.com profile] dvandva are heading up called [livejournal.com profile] neoficbitches. If you know who the [livejournal.com profile] ficbitches are, then little further explanation is necessary. If you don't: it basically consists of myself and a handful of others, trolling the internet for very bad (read: riotously funny) fanfiction and posting reviews/summaries of it for the amusement of the general public (read: at this point? Nobody.)

So if any of that silliness interests you, check out the community info, and stick it on your friends list. I promise I'll keep it as interesting as my little black heart will allow.

Next up: stuff involving actual writing.

Oh, would you look at that. Do you know what that means?

That means I'm a WINNER! WOOO!!!

Not only that, but the story's done, to boot. Hot damn. Draft 1 is finished. Pretty freaking amazing. Pretty freaking awful. Pretty freaking amazing.

And now, to bed. Verily.

Call me crazy (go on, I dare ya), but I'm going to aim to have this thing finished by the time I lay me weary head down to rest at the end of the night morning.

Time to start with the Cycle of Procrastination.

Okay:

Nov. 27th, 2004 10:12 am

Current Wordcount: 38,352

My goal for the end of the day is 45,000 words, which means I'd have to write around 6,500 words to get there. I'll probably pick at it for another hour, then go have coffee with my folks, and then just sort of hack at it in little bursts throughout the day. (I could probably get away with writing a bit less, but I might as well aim high, eh?)

Besides, I want a bit of time to keep the spiffy green bar on the NaNo boards before I trade it in for an official "Winner!" purple one once I validate my novel.

I really think I'm going to take the whole month of December off, writing-wise. In fact, I have about eight million books that I'm half-way through that I should really finish, so maybe devoting December to them is an idea. (I could also stand to read some more kids books, so when I dig back into "Boringville" for editing in January, I'll be in the right headspace again.)

(Note to self: read lots of Terry Pratchett next month, especially his kids books.) I also need to read "Politics and the English Language" and re-read "Elements of Style".

Right, enough stalling by writing rambling LJ entries. Going to write now.

Goal!

Wordcount: 36,005 (Yeah, this is what we call "cutting it close". I finished a chapter and had 200 words to go, so I poked around and padded - err, I mean, elaborated on some things from past chapters.)

Percentage of goal: 72%
Percentage of month passed: 83%

Catching up quickly!

I'll be in the clear as long as I write 3,000 words (give or take) every day until the end of the month. And I might get another chunk done tonight, since this is the start of my weekend - just to take the pressure off.
wordwhacker: (Default)
Righto, so:

Current Wordcount: 33,173

Goals:
- Minimum: 3,000 words (36,000 total, give or take)
- Optimum: Shit, I'll take whatever I can get.

On another note, I think I'm going to hold off on posting the rest of the Boringville Saga for now, simply because the thought of having to face the past 9,000 words of plotless, witless schlock again in order to HTMLize it is putting me off from ever wanting to write anything ever ever again ever. Seriously, it's bad, folks. I'm getting to the point in the plot where I know roughly what's going on, but everything is sketchy, primarily the behaviour, appearance, motivations and general, um, everything about the aliens. This is going to need a lot of work. A lot.

I'll still post it in its general First Draft Glory, but I think I need to spend some time away from it for now, lest I lose my gumption to carry on with the rest of the schlock.

Speaking of which, I think I'll go write some more now. Um, yay?
wordwhacker: (Default)
Wordcount: 33,173 (not quite 200 words short of my goal. I'm happy wit dat. My brain must have decided to call it quits once it saw that I'd hit 33,000.)

Percentage done: 66%
Percentage of month passed: 80%

I can get to the goal no problem if I write 3,000 words a day. Definitely do-able.
wordwhacker: (Default)
Current Wordcount: 30,325

Tonight's Goals:
- Minimum: 3,000 words (33,325 total)
- Optimum: 5,000 words (35,325 total)

Let's get this show on the road.
wordwhacker: (Default)
At the end of the night:

Wordcount: 30,325
Percentage done: 60%
Percentage of month passed: Still 77%

\/\/007!

[Edit:] And for those of you who are waiting in anticipation for (what will be a somewhat botched) Chapter Seven - later tonight. Now? Sleep.
wordwhacker: (Default)
When we begin tonight:

Wordcount: 27,559
Percentage done: 55%
Percentage of month passed: 77%

My minimum goal is to get to 30,000 tonight.
My optimum goal is to hit 33,000.
Let's see how the night shapes up.

Grr.

Dear Lotus Notes:

At what point, when I selected a humble file for use as an attachment, did the "cancel" button become the "oh, just go ahead and delete the whole file already!" button?

Do you want to know the answer?

Do you?

The answer is FUCKING NEVER, ASSHOLE!

Thanks to you, 3,000 words of sloppy, badly written, extremely precious prose has been lost, never to be seen again. So you know what, bitch? I'm-a write down a synopsis, as detailed as I can make it, of what I wrote this evening that you stole. Then I'm-a count how many words that takes me, and add it to my overall total, which, by the way, I'm keeping at where it should be if it wasn't suspiciously missing that prose that you stole.

And then I'm never sending an attachment through you again, bitch.

Sincerely,
A vindicated-feeling Cass

(Dear Microsoft Word,

That deal today, with not having any backup files of my novel despite the fact that I've been obsessively saving it throughout the night? Not cool, my friend. Not cool at all.

I'm watching you.

Sincerely,
A further vindicated-feeling Cass)

That's right - I just wrote 7,000 words in one sitting. The funny thing is that I could easily keep going, but I need to do those silly things like "eat" and "go arrange songs for a gig next weekend" and "work". The good news (what, 7,000 words in one sitting wasn't good enough?!) is that my story has officially stepped up into high gear. Now it's just a matter of going through the motions, taking my characters through the rest of the plot, and praying to whatever deity will listen that I don't hit the end before 50,000 rolls around.

Chapters Four, Five and Six should be coming this evening. And myabe chapter seven, if I don't keel over first.

Righto.

Not bad at all, if I do say so myself. Chapter Four will probably wind up closing me out at a cool 16,000 words, if my guess is correct.

That's right, folks, I just wrote 5,000 words.

Ow, my neck. Ow, my prose. But it's all good.

Will post chapter three later (they're getting progressively more sucky, but such is NaNo), when I have the energy to add all of the #%(&@# HTML for my excessive use of italics.
wordwhacker: (Default)
Dear World,

I am currently sitting at just over 6,000 words for my NaNovel.

I hereby pledge that I will have no less than 10,000 words by the end of the night.

Should I reach 15,000 before the night is over, I will reward myself by eating not only the Hershey's Kiss that is sitting on my monitor, but also the one that is sitting in my cupboard at home. (Yeah, I'm not holding my breath on this one.)

Time to get a coffee, reluctantly end my conversations with amazing women, and write, write, write.

Getting a bit slack - wound up doing NO writing over the weekend, which is about par for the course. I'll need to buckle down tonight both before I go to work and for a couple of hours in the middle of the night and try to wrap up chapter two and head into chapter three, which should catch me up with the pace.
wordwhacker: (Default)
So, remember that plot idea I was talking about last time? The one I'd abandoned my original novel idea in hopes of writing?

It flopped. Went belly-up.

So what am I writing now? Of all things, a novel I started in grade eight, about school kids and aliens. A youth novel.

I am clearly insane.

It seems to have been a good choice, though. It's coming along. I have twice as much of it as I had of my last attempt.

Word Count: 3,362
Percentage of goal: 6.7%
Percentage of month past: 9%

Not far off the pace. I'll need to catch up tonight / this weekend, though.
